Do you live somewhere in Michigan where power outages are a frequent fact of life? Large numbers of trees coexisting near rickety above-ground power lines can cause all too common power outages during high winds and stormy weather. Depending on where you live in Michigan, downed power lines can lead to hours, days, and even weeks of your home being without power.
You could keep a standard gasoline generator on hand to power your essential electronics in case of such an emergency, but you will be limited, and will have to choose only a couple of appliances to run at one time. Lucky for us, there is a better solution. In this article, we will discuss how you can use your Ford F-150 to keep your home powered when you are cut off from access to your local electric grid.
Powering Your Home With A Standard Portable Generator
Gasoline generators are a great way to have access to some portable power in case of an emergency. Still, they might not be powerful enough to handle the total capacity of your home’s daily energy needs.
Using one of these less powerful generators, you can get away with running some of your essentials, such as a few lights, fans, a television, and your fridge. But there is a fast and hard limit of what they can handle at one time – you could quickly max out the power on a gasoline generator when you try to run a 1500-watt microwave, 600-watt coffee maker, or any other higher-power electronics.
No doubt, if your home loses power for an extended period, a gasoline generator will struggle to support your family's daily energy needs. But what if you could power your entire home in an emergency using your Ford-150 pickup truck?
Using Your Ford F-150 With Pro Power On-Board To Power Your Home
Ford's Hybrid PowerBoost V6 engine is a true powerhouse, combining gas and electric energy to achieve maximum pulling power. With an impressive max capacity weight of 12,700 lbs and 430 HP + 570 lb-ft torque rating, this engine provides all you need when it comes time for your next adventure!
If you owned a 2022 or 2023 Ford F-150 Hybrid pick-up truck along with the necessary power strips and power cords, a power outage could go from being a home life paralyzing event; to instead be a minor, almost unnoticeable, inconvenience. How is that possible? Because the new F-150 Hybrid trucks are capable of powering your home!
With its class-exclusive Pro Power Onboard™ generator, the new F150 offers exportable power when you need it most. But suppose you want to keep your home running at full capacity during a power outage. In that case, you will absolutely want to get a Ford F-150 truck powered by a 3.5L V6 engine with a fully upgraded Pro Power Onboard system for a whopping 7200W of transferable energy and mobile generator capabilities.
What is Ford Pro Power Onboard
Pro Power Onboard is a mobile generator feature option available on the Ford-150 that supplies powerful and efficient energy from electric outlets built into your truck bed. Being able to run power saws on a job site or charging up electric dirt bikes at a remote riding spot is what Ford designed the Pro Power Onboard system to do.
Handling those tasks requires a lot of power, and the adequate Pro Power Onboard system can complete the job without breaking a sweat. But thanks to having the capability to put out the impressive amount of energy needed to do those tasks, an F-150 with Pro Power Onboard can be equally as perfect to act as an emergency home energy grid. Even better, it will always be there, ready and waiting in your driveway to save the day when a tree falls, and the lights go out.
Available Pro Power Onboard Options
Pro Power Onboard generators are available in several different outputs on the Ford F-150, including a 2,000W 2.0kW (available with optional gas engines), a 2,400W 2.4 kW (standard with the available 2.5L PowerBoost engine, and a 7,200W 7.2kW option (available with the 3.5L PowerBoost engine). Each one is an excellent choice for supplying your electronics with energy when you are away from a functioning on-grid power outlet. Still, again, you will want to opt for the 7,200W Pro Power Onboard system for taking on the tremendous job of powering your entire home.
What Do I Need To Use Pro Power Onboard For Powering My Home
The F-150's generator can power your home when your electricity is out using one of two setups. The optimal approach would be running a cable from one of the 30 amp, 240-volt outlets in your truck bed to a 30 amp transfer switch allowing you to power selected circuits within your home. If this isn't possible due to not owning a transfer switch, you could always run extension cords from your truck to your home instead to power things like your refrigerator, HVAC system, computers, and lighting. But you will need to use thick extension cords that are adequately rated for the amount of wattage you use to safely avoid electric accidents.
There are four standard 120-volt outlets below the 30-amp plug, and each pair is a 20-amp circuit with a 2400-watt rating. You can also find 120-volt outlets inside the interior as well.
Does Ford Make Any Other Electric Vehicles?
Don't need all that portable power but still want to reduce your transportation costs? Ford offers a complete line of hybrids, fully electric vehicles (EV), and plug-in hybrids. Take for example the affordable 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid truck, 2022 Ford Explorer Platinum SUV Hybrid, and the 2022 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid SUV. Or you could opt to go all electric with Ford’s 2022 F-150 Lightning™, 2022 Mustang Mach-E, or the Ford E-Transit Van Plug-In.

Why Pro Power Onboard Is a Better Choice Than Other Portable Generators
You might wonder, why not just buy a 7200-watt generator? Because if you are shopping for a truck and learn that the F150 Hybrid will satisfy all your other needs, then adding the affordable 7200-watt Pro Power Onboard generator is a no-brainer.
You won't find a state-of-the-art 7000-watt generator at an affordable price, which means you will have to pay a considerable cost to own a generator that is equally as powerful to operate as the 7200-watt Pro Power Onboard system. If you do find a cheap generator with a similar power output, it will likely sound similar to a loud lawnmower, which will be obnoxiously blaring away in your driveway as you anxiously wait for your home’s main power to be restored. With Pro Power Onboard built into your F-150 Hybrid, you can power your home quietly in peace, and happily forget you are even using a generator.
